Welcome to the Great Blasket Island live blog.
The Great Blasket has a fasinating history along with an abundance of wildlife, character and beauty. To help with your complete Great Blasket Island experience we will endeavour to provide you with all the aspects of island life – past and present. Our resisdent ‘ Islander ‘ Geraldine is running both the cafe and hostel. She was born in Cork but now resides in Northern Ireland and is our treasure who is there to welcome and help you on your visit.
We shall also post regular updates from our daily boat tours that depart Dingle Harbour at 11am. So far this year, we have been spoilt with marine activity, April and May were two of the best months we’ve had so far (weather included) and we were blessed to have endless sightings of common dolphins, basking sharks, minke whales and even close up encounters with humpback whales. Island bird colonies have also been thriving this year, gannets, shearwater’s, fulmar’s and puffins being just a few of the many species that frequent this area. Lastly the island is home to the largest grey seal colony in the British Isles and many can be seen relaxing on the Tra Bàn (White Strand).
We hope you enjoy your visit to the Great Blasket Island!
